THE NATIONAL YOUTH AGENCY: Young people have major role to play instrengthening communities

"Young people are taking the lead in challenging racism," said Raja Miah. Raja, from the Peacemaker project in Oldham, described how the project brings together Asian young people to mentor White young people, and what a positive impact this has had on tackling racism. "We have seen a real change in local attitudes since the start of the project, and it's this experience that informs my work on the national community cohesion panel. Reports from the disturbances in 2001 all point to the importance of young people being actively involved in strengthening their communities."

More than 50 participants from a range of agencies working with young people met at the event jointly organised by The NYA and the Government Office North-East on Tuesday 18 November in Newcastle. The aim was to share experiences and practical advice on the many ways in which young people are helping to change their local communities for the better.
