The National Youth Agency: Young people gain entitlement toeducational leisure activities

We are now at the final stage in the development of legislation stemming from the Youth Matters green paper. The key section for youth work has been clause six of the education and inspections bill on positive activities for young people.

The NYA, with other youth work bodies, has been working to ensure that the content of this legislation includes greater protection and promotion of youth work approaches.

Section six of the final Act will insert a new section (section 507b) into the Education Act of 1996. This will require the relevant English local authorities to "as far as is reasonably practicable" secure for young people "sufficient" educational and recreational leisure-time activities which are "for the improvement of their wellbeing".
