The National Youth Agency: What's changed

1 min read
What's Changed is a tool for groups to record the outcomes of participation by young people. In this occasional column we summarise an example of how young people have brought about change.

Organisation: White Lands Action Group

Issue: To prevent the destruction of their free play space

The situation: A planning application was made in Richmond, North Yorkshire to create a new access road for a redeveloped farmhouse and outbuildings. A natural play area, located near to the proposed site would be destroyed if the application was passed. Children and young people did not want this to happen. Young people formed their own petition, wrote formal letters of opposition, attended action group meetings, site visits and the planning committee.

What children and young people said: "Sometimes we would just take the play area for granted but this made it feel more important to us." "It was good that people would listen and see what it meant to us." "We were surprised that the adults listened to us and helped us fight to keep the area. It made us feel good and important."
