The National Youth Agency: Researchers aiming to improve the lives of young people in care

1 min read
The National Youth Agency has established the Young Researcher Network (YRN), a partnership with 15 youth organisations to value, support and encourage research led by young people. With the training phase complete, the 15 groups will research a range of different issues. In the third of our series of project profiles we take a look at Bradford Youth Service's Voice & Influence Team, and its Get The Life U Want (GLUW) project.

The main aim of GLUW is to explore how life can be improved for young people in Bradford's care system. Living in care can throw up many additional challenges to those affected. Young people in care may have problems with family, education and the staff they work with or rely on and their potential to succeed can be severely impaired. GLUW research will combine individual questionnaires and group interviews to develop a greater understanding of the main issues and will aim to raise awareness of how other people regard and treat young people in care.

The information gleaned will be used confidentially by the project to write a report and produce a DVD. By the end of October, the group hopes to stage an event where they will discuss the findings of the research, as well as launch the resulting DVD. Led by two focus groups, questionnaires will be sent to around 550 young people, aged 11 to 21, presently in Bradford's care system.
