Positive youth development (PYD) lays a foundation for engaging young people in productive activities, not merely to divert young people from potential problem situations and risk behaviours, but also to provide opportunities for young people to be actively engaged in their own development.
Participation in an activity is not enough in itself. PYD promotes the acquisition of skills and competencies as well as the supportive, long-term connections young people establish with adult mentors and peers across a range of settings.
The report finds programmes respond best to the dynamism of adolescence by providing a consistent framework that can expand or contract as needed, while US evaluated PYD programmes have also demonstrated that they result in higher test scores in formal education and increased progression to higher education when implemented throughout a young person's time in secondary school.
