The National Youth Agency: Health strategy points to key role for youth professionals

1 min read
The National Youth Agency (NYA) has welcomed Healthy Lives, Brighter Futures, the government's new health strategy for young people, as recognising the importance of emotional wellbeing in addressing health concerns.

"Youth workers have long argued that mental health and wellbeing can underlie other issues such as sexual health, alcohol use and obesity," said Fiona Blacke, The NYA's chief cxecutive. "Providing opportunities for young people to build their emotional resilience and seek early support is vital, and this activity is the everyday work of youth workers. Hence we believe their involvement is vital to the success of this strategy.

"The strategy has a number of very positive messages for the non-formal education sector, including a strong call for the voice of young people to be more widely listened to."

It calls for joined-up services that meet the real needs of young people, whether they are based in health centres, schools, colleges or in the community. The NYA welcomes the links that the strategy makes between health and wider activities and opportunities, including sports, positive activities and support for personal development.
