With 12,000 copies sold since originally launching in 2001, Hear by Right has been used widely across strategic partnerships, local authorities and a range of sectors including youth work, social care and health.
Its use ensures the safe, sound and effective participation of children and young people to improve services through their active involvement so they get a better deal and improved outcomes. This also ensures compliance with the legislative requirements of The Children Act 2004.
The latest edition has a number of new aspects to help strengthen the integrity of the process and safeguard against tokenism. For example, it describes how any organisation can use Hear by Right to show evidence of at least an "adequate" level of participation. Go to the Hear by Right shared learning website at www.nya.org.uk/hearbyright, for hundreds of examples from local authorities and voluntary sector groups of building in (not bolting on) effective youth participation.
