"A man, a plan, a canal: Panama!" is a famous palindrome. Meanwhile, "a map, a plan, a box of Quality Street" has been the direct route to success for 27 organisations this year at the Hear by Right mapping and planning days. These free sessions are part of the Participation Works offer funded by the Big Lottery Fund. Two or more organisations meet together with two or more colleagues each - the more the merrier to increase the buy-in at all levels.
They start by agreeing the meaning of the widely-used term "participation" and its benefits both for the organisation as well as for the children and young people themselves. Then the rest of the day is spent using the Hear by Right Building Standards kit to sort out priorities, making a snapshot of their current level of participation with the self-assessment tool and developing a strategic plan for improvement. The Quality Street helps to keep up the energy levels as this intensive process unfolds during the day.
