More than 12m of Heritage Lottery Fund money has been invested in supporting young people to recognise and explore their heritage, working in partnership with the youth and heritage
sectors. Partnership working across these areas has been an essential criterion of the grant programme, bringing together diverse sectors that have not traditionally worked closely together.
Active and committed partnerships have been critical to the programme's success. Recently a museum curator described it to me as "like being let into a secret society" and that since working with a youth work partner she has learned so much about the services provided to young people, about safeguarding issues and how to keep young people motivated and focused. She has also been able to demonstrate to the youth service how archives and heritage can be used to explore citizenship, develop skills and confidence, as well as assisting young people back into education and training.
