The National Youth Agency: Comment - Participatory Budgeting

1 min read
Three cheers for Hazel Blears, who announced recently that her department plans to support a dozen pilots to test out participatory budgeting.

Participatory budgeting supports the direct involvement of communities in making decisions about how money is spent in their area. The evidence suggests it leads to wider democratic involvement, better community facilities and more effective spending.

These pilots provide some excellent opportunities for youth work organisations to build on the work they have spearheaded in involving young people in decision-making. The experience of implementing the youth opportunity fund and the youth capital fund, as well as programmes like YouthBank, will be really valuable and those involved in these programmes need to shout loudly to make sure they are not overlooked. The National Youth Agency will also do its best to promote the learning and evidence that arises from these programmes.
