It is not just the fares (too high) and the age at which the young pay adult fares (too low); it is also the politeness of bus drivers, the cleanliness and the general repair of the buses and safety at bus stops.
Department of Transport research backs this up: young people use bus services more than any other population group and yet their satisfaction with the service is lowest of all users.
But now there may be a ray of hope on the horizon in the shape of the Local Transport Bill, which has just started its passage through Parliament. Although media attention is likely to focus on plans for road pricing, the bill also proposes strengthening the powers of the local authority to ensure bus services properly meet the needs of the local population. There will also be a new bus passenger champion to represent the interests of bus users, and new proposals to expand community transport.
