The Ferret: Barnardo's channels the Force in Barkingside

As the launch of the new Star Wars film draws closer - 14 December for all those interested - the TV and airwaves will be awash with chat about Jedi powers, Luke Skywalker and everyone's favourite Wookie Chewbacca.

When pondering how to promote the reopening of its Barkingside store in east London, the marketing people at Barnardo's must have been rubbing their hands with glee when they discovered that a former actor who played an Ewok in the third instalment of the original Star Wars trilogy lived locally.

For the uninitiated, Ewoks were the small furry creatures that lived in a forest and played a pretty significant hand in toppling the evil Empire in 1983's Return of the Jedi.

Linda Bowley not only played an Ewok in the film, but also lived at the Barnardo's-run Girls' Village Care Home in Barkingside as a child.
