The Ferret: Centenarian recognised at NSPCC awards event

3 mins read
Awards ceremonies are not everyone's cup of tea; there are always those who are just too busy to attend.

At the recent NSPCC Childhood Champion Awards, the prize for the best absence excuse went to 104-year-old Anne Baker. Anne was shortlisted in the Community Volunteer of the Year category, in light of her 50 years of supporting the children's charity.

"It begs the question what she was doing for the previous 54 years," quipped Society chief executive Peter Wanless, before explaining that Anne had written him a letter to apologise for not being able to attend due to the fact she was recuperating from a hip operation!

As excuses go, it's right up there.

Also at the event, Wanless handed over the Branch of the Year award to Bristol and Cardiff - a feat he found "tough" due to being an avid supporter of Somerset County Cricket Club (fierce rivals of Gloucestershire and Glamorgan).
