Teens set to be our climate champions

1 min read Education Youth Work
Young environmentalists are to become champions for climate change as the government attempts to involve England's youth in the battle against carbon emissions.

The Climate Change Champions Competition 2008 will appoint nine regional ambassadors aged 11 to 18. Following regional heats, finalists will compete in Dragon's Den-style interviews in London.

Participants must complete a news report, short film or case study showing how they can encourage their friends, family, school or community to reduce their carbon footprint.

Vicki Felgate, Friends of the Earth's youth and education co-ordinator, said: "Young people have a great influence on their friends, family and the community so getting them talking about climate change is an important way of spreading the word."

Each regional champion will win a year "in office" visiting regional and national events that promote environmental awareness. They will also get to put their views to senior government representatives.
