The Trust for the Study of Adolescence received a grant from the Mobile Manufacturers Forum, the international trade body for mobile phone manufacturers, to study the effect of mobile phones on families.
The research, to be completed in August, will ask 11- to 17-year-olds if carrying a phone makes them feel more or less secure.
The trust will use the results to produce materials for schools about personal safety.
