2 mins read
As part of a wider initiative covering safety on the internet the European Commission is consulting on mobile phone safety.

Sometimes I feel that my only contact with my daughter is through hermobile phone. In what form? A text, a photo, a voice or paying the bill? You want to keep in touch, but a lot of information indicates thatmobiles may be less safe than you might wish. Think street crime,cyber-bullying, text-based advertising, identity theft, radio waves, anddon't get me started on the cost of ring tones.

But mobiles are a part of life now - there's no going back. So a lot ofwork is going into improving safety at national level and beyond. TheEuropean Commission set up a Safer Internet Programme in 1999, includinga 45m euro campaign to equip teachers and parents with knowledge andtools to make the internet safer for children. As part of thatprogramme, the commission has just launched a consultation paper onchild safety and mobile phone services.
