The Government is consulting on plans to introduce set levels of knowledge that children should have about food.

Remember "Getting to Grips with Grub?" I do indeed. One: it was aconsultation about food, and two: it had a great title. Getting to Gripsfocused on food competencies for children aged 14 to 16, but currently,the Food Standards Agency is consulting on a set of UK-wide foodcompetencies for children of different age bands: seven to nine; 11 to12; 14, and 16 and older.

What are food competencies? The minimum food skills and knowledge thatwe (children and adults, practitioners and parents) feel children andyoung people should possess, understand and be able to apply. Areburgers and chips always bad? How much and which fruit and vegetablesshould I be eating every day? How do I poach an egg? What makes a diethealthy?
