The Government is consulting on its sustainable development strategy and one idea is to encourage schools to play a part.

What? The intelligent use of natural resources and that kind of thing?In 2003, Ofsted published a report on sustainable development in schoolsand a number of success factors were identified. Last year, theGovernment announced its sustainable development strategy. It focuses onthe big issues like conspicuous consumption and production, the Arcticmelting away and depleting supplies of natural gas. Sustainable schoolsform part of that strategy. Now, the Department for Education and Skillshas issued an interesting consultation paper. It begins by citingcurrent challenges like climate change, global poverty, mountains ofwaste, water shortages, lower birth rates and disconnected communities.Children are having to learn to cope with significant lifestyle changesnow, in order to improve their lives for the future.
