Taxi law threat to after-school care

Early Years
Childcare group Early Years is in talks with the Northern Ireland Executive on vehicle licensing changes that could stop services collecting children from school.

The province's Driver and Vehicle Agency has issued guidance saying childcare providers will now need a taxi or public service vehicle licence to collect children for after-school sessions. Providers will either have to raise fees to pay for taxis or axe their collection service.

Jennifer Fleck, of the Hillcrest Day Nursery in Belfast, said: "We are fully insured and use our own cars to pick up children. It is not fair that nurseries and parents must face an additional cost."

The Department of Environment has delayed the introduction of the rules while discussions with Early Years take place.
