NCB Now: Evaluating early years intervention

1 min read Early Years
NCB NI is currently involved with other researchers in a large-scale evaluation of early years interventions in Northern Ireland.

The interventions have been designed by Early Years, the organisation for young children, and will be delivered in more than 100 early years settings across Northern Ireland between May 2008 and June 2009.

The interventions are part of the Making It Work Programme and are aimed at improving outcomes for young children in three key areas: children's respect for differences; eagerness and ability to learn; and physical and emotional wellbeing. For example, the Respecting Difference intervention combines a series of cartoon TV advertisements, a resource pack and training for practitioners, and information for parents.

Case studies will be used alongside data collection to assess specific outcomes for children, practitioners and parents. The study is also a random control trial, with half of the selected settings receiving the intervention and the other half acting as a control group. Those in the control group will receive the intervention in the following year.
