NCB Now: Working with new communities

1 min read
Northern Ireland is currently home to 6,500 children and young people who have English as their second language, and promoting their views is a key priority for NCB Northern Ireland (NI).

As part of the NCB NI Strengthening the Voice of Children & Young People in Northern Ireland project, a group of asylum-seeking, refugee and migrant (ASRM) young people met on 23 February with Northern Ireland Assembly junior ministers Gerry Kelly, MLA, and Robin Newton, MLA, and the Northern Ireland commissioner for children and young people, Patricia Lewsley, to launch a postcard campaign highlighting issues faced by ASRM children and young people in Northern Ireland.

The postcards were developed during a series of workshops in 2009 and combine photographs of the young people and handwritten messages to support their peers, inform policy-makers and ask for improvements to services. The project aims to ensure that the experiences of ASRM children and young people are shared so that their communities can understand the realities of being a newcomer in Northern Ireland.
