NCB Now: Highlighting mental health needs

1 min read
The Young NCB NI Advisory Group met recently to discuss highlighting the mental health needs of young people, their chosen priority for action in 2010.

In particular, the group wants to explore the pressures on young people to look a certain way and the potential impact of these pressures on their self-esteem and mental health.

Young NCB NI member, Jonathan Murphy from Banbridge, said: "We are all aware of pressures from the media and our friends to look good and wear cool clothes, but all of these pressures can make young people feel depressed and some young people can get eating disorders as a result. Young NCB NI should learn more about the problem and make government departments help us more to address it."

Young NCB NI, supported by the NCB research team, will gather evidence of the problem by conducting an online survey and research on current support for young people with mental health problems.
