Nursery inspections

1 min read Early Years
With the new Early Years Foundation Stage taking effect from September, nursery inspections in England are set to undergo some changes. Alison Bennett compares the inspection of early years settings across the four nations.

ENGLAND

The inspection of nurseries is carried out by Ofsted. Those nurseries on the early years register will be inspected at least once within the first three or four years of the implementation of the Early Years Foundation Stage. The inspectors will grade the quality of provision with a four-point scale. They will judge how effective the setting is at meeting the needs of children; helping them learn and develop; promoting their welfare; and management of provision.

For those on the childcare register, the inspector will talk to staff, parents and children to make sure policies are being put into practice. Providers are then given one of four grades: outstanding; good; satisfactory; or inadequate.
