I began volunteering at New Hartley Kids Club when I was 10. By the time I was 11, I started nagging the senior development worker at Cramlington Voluntary Youth Project (CVYP) every week to take me up to where she worked with young people with special needs, as I thought I could make a difference. After much persuasion, she took me to CVYP to help out in the Easter schemes.

My first session was with a senior special needs group; working with young people with autism, Down's Syndrome and other disabilities. At first, I struggled to find my feet and looked to the other workers to support me. I came back again that summer, getting involved with the junior special needs groups, where I began to thrive in peer support. As the summer drew to a close, I thought that would be it for this year, but when I was asked to continue working with the senior special needs group, I jumped at the chance. Two years ago, I started to volunteer with the young carers group, helping to make a video to promote awareness of young carers.
