Children's TV programmes such as Blue Peter and Newsround are in long-term decline and failing to attract new, young viewers, according to the latest findings from the BBC Trust.
Its report into the corporation's children and young people's output showed that in autumn last year, audience ratings for CBBC programmes among six- to 12-year-olds had dipped by five per cent. The trust said better scheduling and marketing was needed to ensure programmes such as Blue Peter, which it praised for raising social issues, attract more viewers.
BBC children's radio output was also criticised for failing to interest young listeners. The only new programming was for pre-school children, and even this was poorly marketed.
