Despite having the highest teenage pregnancy rate in western Europe, sexual health advertising aimed at young people continues to be restricted.
TV advertising for condoms is banned before the 9pm watershed and abortion clinics are not allowed to advertise on television at all. Campaigners hoping for a swift change in these rules were left disappointed earlier this month, when the Committee of Advertising Practice announced that its review into advertising rules will not be completed until next year.
Meanwhile, alcohol advertising in sport and entertainment continues to target young people, according to the British Medical Association. The medical body is calling for a ban on all alcohol marketing activity, such as lager brand Carling's football league cup sponsorship and whiskey brand Johnnie Walker's sponsorship of Formula One team McLaren.
