Talking Point - How can young people reverse adults' negative views of them?

2 mins read Youth Work
A survey by Barnardo's has found many adults harbour prejudices about young people. Find out how your youth group is treated by its elders.

Adult opinions of children and young people is at an all-time low. According to a Barnardo's survey of 2,000 adults, just over half believe children behave like animals. A third believe the streets are "infested" with children and four out of 10 believe more needs to be done to protect adults from children.

The survey raises serious points about how adults and the media perceive young people.

Questions youth workers could consider asking off the back of these findings include: Why do so many adults have such a negative view of young people? Is it the media's fault? Do journalists and TV producers focus too much on offending and fail to report positive stories?
