The campaign to lower the age limit for voting from 18 to 16 is gaining momentum with a recent Youth Citizenship Commission consultation showing considerable support for the move.
Two-thirds of those that responded, including youth groups and young people, backed calls to reduce the voting age to 16 for all UK elections.
This has been just one of a number of news stories in recent months to focus on age limits that youth workers could draw on to spark a debate about when young people are considered responsible citizens or equal to adults.
Youth work consultant Vanessa Rogers says the best starting point is to make sure that young people are aware of all the age limits that affect them. Ask the group to guess the legal age limit for a range of areas, such as voting, marriage and joining the army. Some, such as voting, they are likely to already know. But do they know the age of criminal consent?
