What is it? The sensory play sessions provide children, babies and those with sensory deprivations with stimulating play opportunities using light and sound toys. Parents are also supported in communicating with their child through sessions including sign language classes.

Who does it help? The service has helped children such as two-year-old Harvey Minto who has been visiting the sensory playroom for almost a year and during the lead up to his cochlear implant surgery four months ago. But the service also helps with the learning development of all children, especially babies.

What's on offer? There is a soft play area that includes a ball pit to advance children's spatial awareness, the sensory room, which is dark and furnished softly so that children can make use of specialist equipment such as light and bubble tubes, and fibre optic light curtains and strings. The Tots' Hall is where messy play takes place. The sessions involve exposing children to new textures such as sand, water and paint and they are encouraged to make as much mess as they like. Children's centre volunteers also lead singing sessions and hand gesture play.
