The Get Real project, launched by culture secretary Tessa Jowell and schools standards minister David Miliband this week, will provide 11- to 17-year-olds with a structured programme of summer activities.
The Big Lottery Fund grant will allow Get Real to run in 20 areas over three years, expanding on the nine areas where the project was piloted last year.
The money will be split between several organisations, namely Active Training and Education, the Brathay Hall Trust, BTCV, Exsportise, Outward Bound and PGL Travel.
John Bagge, Get Real project manager at the Brathay Hall Trust, said: "The project aims to provide fun, challenging learning opportunities in a safe, structured environment. It's a seven-week programme, including a five-day residential course."
