Summer activities: Do it 4 Real to woo the disadvantaged

Thirty-one per cent of 11- to 17-year-olds attending the first Do it 4 Real camps this summer were from disadvantaged groups. The association's target is 40 per cent over two years, so it will have to ensure that nearly half of next year's intake are from disadvantaged groups to make up the shortfall.

Leisa Forrest, Do it 4 Real outreach worker, said: "One of the barriers lay in establishing contacts with organised groups, youth offending teams and youth workers. We are looking to increase involvement with people with disabilities, asylum seekers and Black and minority ethnic communities for 2006." Plans to run "taster days" for groups are also in the pipeline, she added.
