Students reject option of diplomas

1 min read Education
Only five per cent of young people are currently considering taking a diploma, according to a survey seen exclusively by CYP Now.

Commissioned by the Family and Parenting Institute (FPI), the YouGov survey looked at how young people make decisions about careers and qualifications, as well as the role parents play in those decisions.

Conducted among 2,000 young people and 2,000 parents, Parental Influence on Young People shows that only one in 20 pupils in Years 7 to 9 are considering diplomas. The figure is the same for Years 10 to 11.

Apprenticeships and other vocational qualifications are also unpopular, but are taken more seriously by pupils in Years 10 and 11.

A spokesman for the Association of Learning Providers said: "This survey confirms that, in respect of diplomas, apprenticeships and other vocational learning, we have a huge task in improving the amount and quality of information provided on them to students while still at school."
