Following three successful pilots, which started in January, the Living for Sport project is now being rolled out to 70 schools. It is set to reach more than 1,000 young people in the next year.
Living for Sport is a strand of the BSkyB-funded Reach for the Sky community initiative. Partners include the Youth Sport Trust, local education authorities and the Department for Education and Skills' Behaviour Improvement Programme.
Many of the participants will be at risk of expulsion or in receipt of learning support. Teachers are trained to evaluate the effects of sport on pupils.
Once they have carried out the activity, either within or outside the school timetable, the young people then produce a book or video, or stage an event, to celebrate their participation.
