POLICY: Shake-up for social work supervision
The supervision of social workers would be handed over from councils to local social work boards under radical proposals presented to the government by the British Association of Social Workers (BASW).
BASW said the measures contained in its Social Work Bill would save public money and address "the longstanding failure of local government in many parts of England to deliver effective support and supervision for social workers".
The document calls for the creation of a chief social worker role and a social work commissioning board, which would distribute government funding to local social work boards.
These would include representatives from local authorities, GP commissioning and social work practices plus service users, young people and other members of the public.
