EDUCATION: Tougher checks on social work courses
Less than one in five universities offering the social work degree fulfilled all the expectations of the training regulator the General Social Care Council (GSCC) last year.
Just 14 institutions fully met the requirements of the GSCC in the 2008-09 academic year, it revealed.
Others were asked to make improvements, while two - Brunel University and Thames Valley University - were judged "at risk" and are under investigation.
For the first time, the GSCC has published all inspection reports in full, as part of a tough new regime designed to boost the quality of training. This will include more spot-checks on poorly performing institutions.
