Social Care News: Young carers - Oxfordshire unveils support strategy

Oxfordshire County Council has launched a multi-agency three-year strategy to support young carers.

Teachers will be trained to look out for signs such as frequent lateness, exhaustion and under-achievement. Social workers are already being told to ask about the needs of the whole family when they are assessing an adult for a care package.

Young carers will get more information about mental health, self-esteem and stress management. "If we can ensure that more young carers are identified, we will be in a better position to stop families reaching crisis point," said Deborah Parkhouse, the council's young carers strategic development worker.
