Young carers provide invaluable support for their families. It is therefore disappointing that councils and their partners are not yet doing enough to identify and support them. It is unacceptable that, for most young carers, no assessment of their own needs is carried out by children's social care professionals.
The Ofsted report, Supporting Young Carers, provides a snapshot of the experience of young carers in eight council areas. The report highlights inconsistent joint working between councils and their partners, and also sometimes within the council itself. However, it also shows it can be done well, with examples of good practice that demonstrate some councils do have the commitment, knowledge and ability to deliver effective support to young carers. What is important is that all councils learn from this best practice.
