Social Care News: Young carers - Council to connect with youngcarers

Birmingham City Council is to launch a new strategy for young carers.

Jayne Brookes, strategic commissioner for carers' services at thecouncil, said: "There are 4,000 to 5,000 young carers in Birmingham. We're in touch with such a small number it's ridiculous."

The strategy will prioritise assessments of young carers. "We will beworking more closely with adult and children's services," saidBrookes.

Young carers' groups will help develop a protocol so that all agenciesadhere to certain guidelines. The council also plans to commission newservices for young Black and ethnic minority carers. "This is becausemany of these young people care for parents with mental healthproblems," said Brookes.

As Children Now went to press, the strategy was expected to be approvedby councillors on Monday 12 June.
