Young carers: Council launches support strategy

The Princess Royal Trust for Carers and North Tyneside council last week launched a strategy to improve support for young carers.

The strategy includes a new role of young carers development worker, whowill be charged with dispelling the stigma that many young carers feel.It also includes plans to offer support in schools to address problemssuch as absenteeism and bullying.

Gill Alexander, the council's director of children's services, said:"This strategy will ensure young carers can balance their caring rolewith a fulfilling life that ensures they reach their full potential andhave the same opportunities as their peers."

The trust in North Tyneside supports 275 young carers, but census datasuggests around 500 still go without help.
