Children's minister Margaret Hodge told the General Social Care Council conference last week her department was considering a reward scheme for children's social workers.
Ian Johnston, director of the British Association of Social Workers, welcomed the concept but said it must not be confined to children's workers.
He said: "We have always wanted career grades in social work. But we would be concerned if this is about retaining people in children's services rather than other parts of social work."
