At the start of the month, the new independent children's services trust in Doncaster was launched with the task of ensuring children's social care gets a "good" Ofsted judgment within three years and an "outstanding" within five. It is a big ask, made all the tougher by the increasing crisis in the recruitment and retention of children's social workers.
The challenge is of course not be a new one - Paul Moffat, the chief executive of the new Doncaster trust, identifies workforce issues as fundamental to the department's struggles of recent years. But there is a growing sense that problems with recruiting and retaining staff are holding back sustainable improvement in children's services more generally.
