20% of looked-after children with three or more placements during 2003/04 (13 per cent in England)

- 1,890 average gross weekly spend per looked-after child in a children's home in 2003/04 (2,048 in England)

- 52% of young people leaving care with at least one GCSE at grade A*-G or a GNVQ in 2003/04 (49 per cent in England)

- 81% of children looked after for more than 12 months had a dental check and health assessment during the previous 12 months (75 per cent in England)

The council received a one-star rating from the Commission for Social Care Inspection in 2004. The commission said it served some children well and rated its capacity for improvement as uncertain. Improvements recommended include effectively communicating policies on safeguarding children to frontline staff.
