Social Care News: Northern Ireland - Trusts given extra responsibilities

The Northern Irish trusts that deal with young people leaving care will have enhanced duties, the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety has announced.

Draft guidance published last week lays out in detail the extra duties the health and social services trusts will have to assess and support care leavers.

The department wants trusts to ensure young people do not leave care until they are ready; improve assessment, preparation and planning for those leaving care; provide better personal support after young people leave care; and improve the financial support available to care leavers.

The trusts will have to produce an assessment of need within three months of the child becoming eligible for post-care help. And they must produce a pathway plan for each child, which will set out the way ahead and will be reviewed every six months.
