Health news: Northern Ireland - Service shake-up threatens funding

Health visitors fear funding for children's services in Northern Ireland will be hit by a major shake-up of health and social care services.

At the moment there are 19 health and social services trusts in theprovince. Some are acute trusts, some community trusts and a few coverboth areas. Each has its own budget.

However, under proposed laws unveiled last week, they will be replacedwith five trusts, each responsible for community and acute care.

Briege Coyle, professional officer for the Community Practitioners' andHealth Visitors' Association, said: "Traditionally, acute trusts havegot the biggest share. My concern is there will be a greater emphasis onwaiting lists and chronic illnesses and health visitors, school nursesand social services will be seen as a soft option."
