Social Care News: Fostering - Glasgow planning allowance increase

Glasgow City Council plans to bring foster carers' allowances in line with the Fostering Network's recommended levels, after an internal review found its service was "overstretched".

The council said more foster carers were needed. Nearly a quarter of foster families are caring for more than three children and many of the children are unrelated, leading to "significant safeguarding issues".

The number of children in foster care rose 12.5 per cent to 828 in the two years to March 2004.

The council wants to recruit an extra 50 adoptive parents over the next two years.
