Social Care News: Climbie case - Tribunal calls for improved training

The Government must ensure social workers are better trained, resourced and supervised, according to the tribunal that last week said Victoria Climbie's social worker can work with children again.

The Care Standards Tribunal ordered the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) to remove Lisa Arthurworrey's name from the list of people deemed unsuitable to work with children.

It also said that a social worker with 19 months' experience could not be described as experienced in child protection work.

Ian Johnston, director of the British Association of Social Workers, said: "If a local authority is running a 30 per cent vacancy rate for social workers, managers are faced with the dilemma of sending an inexperienced person or no-one."

John Coughlan, chair of the Association of Directors of Social Services' children and families committee, added that the DfES's workforce strategy addressed the need for social workers to be adequately trained and supported.
