Last week, it emerged that 375 qualified social workers have records forhigh- or medium-risk offences, which includes crimes such as cruelty toa child. More than 300 of the 375 are now registered with the GeneralSocial Care Council. Registration requires social workers to declare anycriminal convictions.
The council says that the "rigorous registration process" is effectivein safeguarding the needs of service users. More than 100 applicantshave been rejected since 2003.
But Ian Johnston, chief executive of the British Association of SocialWorkers, said: "We haven't had the kind of dialogue we would like tohave with the council over how they deal with people with convictions."
