Golden hello for social workers

Careers Social Care
Surrey County Council is setting up a golden hello scheme to entice 60 children's social workers to join its ranks.

The council is offering new recruits a £6,500 bonus in a bid to employ 60 more workers and keep staff at the council. It believes the scheme will also help reduce children's services' costs by saving on temporary and contract staff.

Felicity Budge, head of children's services, said: "We know that permanent staff offer a brilliant service."

But Ian Johnston, director of the British Association of Social Workers, said social workers had lodged concerns with him about golden hello schemes, saying they wanted a financial commitment to reward loyalty instead.
