Social Care News: Child trafficking - Asylum stance impactsefforts

The Government's punitive approach to asylum seekers is helping drive child trafficking underground, says the British Association of Social Workers.

The warning comes as a report by Unicef sets out what needs to be doneto prevent the trafficking of children.

Ian Johnston, director of the association, said: "Social workers aredesperate to engage with children who've suffered any form of abuse. Butthe Government's punitive approach to immigration is not helpful as itmakes it very difficult for asylum seekers to approach authorities."

He added: "Social workers face real dilemmas around how to offerconfidential services when we are also expected to be agents of theimmigration service."- www.unicef.org.uk/publications/pdf/traffick3008.pdf.
