The Frank Buttle Trust, which gives grants to children and young peoplein need, has created a quality mark for institutions that support careleavers.
Bradford, Edge Hill, Kingston, Leeds, Sheffield Hallam and Southamptonuniversities are the first to achieve this accolade. They have allsigned a commitment statement to increase the number of care leavers inhigher education.
Gerri McAndrews, chief executive of the trust, said the quality markuniversities were using various approaches. "They're making care leaversa priority in their admission procedures, some are going to schools toinform teachers and pupils, and Leeds will guarantee a bursary for allcare leavers," she said.
The initiative is a response to research, which shows that care leaverswho succeeded in going to university did so against considerableodds.
